Ranking Ranqueen

Far be it for JPN consumers to buy any item that is not already the most popular. But with the enormous number of products released here, how do we know what to choose?

Enter: Ranking Ranqueen, a Tokyo chain selling only the top 3, 5 or 10 items in a bewildering range of categories. Rankings are based on sales data from big Tokyo department stores and independent research.

Why bother thinking when there when Ranking Queen is available. Best-selling lists for bath powder. Tooth picks. Pasta sauce. Cell phones. And so on. Rankings are updated every week, mercilessly replacing the out of favor with the Next Big Thing.

There are eight Ranking Ranqueen stores in total: five stores in Tokyo, two stores in Yokohama, and one store in Fukuoka. The company is owned by Tokyu Corporation.

These are strange places. Doesn't really feel like a retain outlet. I have wandered in a couple of times, but they never have the product or brands that I want. I can't believe they can stay in business. Odd concept.

I was walking through Shibuya, Hachiko crossing on Saturday and the huge projection tv on the Starbucks buildinig was advertising Ranking....Spectacular media, but same boring ads. Thought of Uncle Swint as it flashed by.

From the second comment and the growing popularity of Ranking Queen, it's probably here to stay. Not to mention that JPN could use some consumer spending.
